Clemson lands another 2017 commit

by - Assoc. Editor -

2017 catcher Drew Donathan from Charlotte, North Carolina (Charlotte HS) has committed to Clemson on Monday afternoon according to his twitter account. Donathan was also recruited by the College of Charleston, Florida, Furman, Virginia and others.

TigerNet spoke with Donathan on Tuesday morning and he said that he is "excited to be part of the Clemson family!"

Donathan has an interesting recruiting path to Clemson as he was first recruited by former Clemson coach Jack Leggett. He visited Clemson for a baseball game during this past season and returned and committed on Monday afternoon.

"I was first recruited by Coach Bradley LeCroy and Coach Jack Leggett and then Coach Monte Lee invited me on a visit and I committed in his office."

Donathan thinks that Monte Lee will be a great fit for him and Clemson. "I think the world of Coach Lee and he has done great things at College of Charleston and without a doubt he'll do the same at Clemson - Omaha and a National Championship."

He was also impressed with the new baseball facilities that are currently being constructed. "The facilities are awesome, there's nothing that you can say bad about them. The new player facility is the best I've ever seen in College baseball."

The campus was also a bright spot for the young catcher prospect. "The campus is unreal, everyone is wearing orange and I love the college town of Clemson. Definitely the place for me without question. But the first class hospitality, tradition of Clemson, and talking to Coach LeCroy was breathtaking and stood Clemson out the most."

Donathan was named 2015 Underclass High Honorable Mention and ranked #161 overall for the class of 2017 according to Perfect Game USA. He is also rated the 2nd highest arm strength (MPH) for a catcher.

As a sophomore, he hit .340 with 10 doubles and 4 homeruns while being an outstanding defensive catcher.

2017 1B/OF Matthew Cooper from Virginia Beach, Virginia also committed to Clemson on Monday.
