Clemson Opens Golf Season at Carpet Classic

Clemson, S.C.— Clemson opens its 2014-15 men’s golf season on Friday at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, Ga. The 54-hole event will run through Sunday. This marks the seventh consecutive season Larry Penley’s Tigers have opened the season at The Farm, a par 72 course that measures 7,012 yards.

Clemson will take a veteran team to the 14-team event that includes three top 10 teams and five top 20 teams. The Clemson roster includes senior Billy Kennerly and juniors Stephen Behr, Cody Proveaux, Blake Kennedy and Miller Capps.

“We are excited to start the season,” said Penley, who has been Clemson’s head coach since the fall of 1983. “We have an experienced team headed to The Farm and I am anxious to get started. The performances in our qualifying were outstanding so I am hopeful they will carry over to this weekend.”

The field includes six teams from the SEC and four teams from the ACC. Clemson is joined by third-ranked Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Wake Forest from the ACC, while number-one ranked Alabama, LSU, South Carolina, Auburn, Florida and Tennessee will represent the SEC. The other schools in the tournament are Kennessaw State, North Florida, Middle Tennessee State and UT Chattanooga.

Clemson finished a strong fourth at the Carpet Classic last year. Proveaux had one of his best tournaments of the year with a fifth-place finish thanks to a two-under-par score of 214 for the 54 holes. Capps shot an even-par 216 and finished tied for 12th.

Stephen Behr was Clemson’s top golfer last year with a 72.57 stroke average for his 30 rounds. Capps was third with a 73.17 figure, while Proveaux was fourth at 73.39. Kennedy had a 73.44 average for his nine rounds.

Kennerly played in just one event last year as he battled a virus in the fall, but he was a starter as a freshman and a sophomore. He had five consecutive rounds in the 60s to close the 2013 season, a school record.

Proveaux was Clemson’s top golfer during the preseason qualifier for this tournament as he had a 10-under-par score for the 54 holes played at three courses. He also shot a course record 61 recently during a practice round at The Reserve at Lake Keowee.

This will be Clemson’s 26th appearance at the Carpet Classic. The Tigers have won the tournament four times previously, including the fall of 2002 when Clemson began its National Championship season with a victory in the then 18-team event.
