Clemson Honorary Captains vs. Wake Forest

Clemson, SC—Former Clemson two-time All-Americans Donnell Woolford and John Phillips, both natives of the state of North Carolina, will be Clemson’s honorary captains for Saturday’s Homecoming game against Wake Forest. Kickoff is at 3:30 PM at Memorial Stadium.

For each home game this year the Tigers Letterwinners Association is sponsoring the recognition of two former Tiger greats. They will be part of the coin toss prior to the game.

Woolford came to Clemson from Fayetteville, NC and lettered from 1985-88. He started three years, all Clemson ACC Championship teams. He was a consensus first-team All-America cornerback as a senior in 1988. Woolford and Terry Kinard are the only defensive backs to make first-team All-American twice.

A two-time All-ACC player, Woolford was the top vote getter on defense for the All-ACC team in 1988. A first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears, Woolford was the number-11 overall selection in the 1989 draft. He played in the 1994 Pro Bowl and finished his career with 33 interceptions. He was named to Clemson’s Centennial Team in 1996.

Phillips was a two-time All-American offensive guard. The native of Spruce Pine, NC lettered for the Tigers from 1984-87. He captured the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for he state of South Carolina in 1986 and 1987. He started 32 games and played 47 in arrow during his career. He started on the ACC Championship teams of 1986 and 1987 and was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1999.
