CU trustees approve 2 proposed athletic facility capital projects, pre-approval to six others

CLEMSON – Clemson University trustees reviewed a series of proposed athletic facility capital projects at its quarterly meeting Friday, giving final approval to a pair while granting pre-approval to six for future development.

Upgrades to Doug Kingsmore Stadium and the third phase of the WestZone complex at Memorial Stadium received final approval from the board.

The pre-concept approval status allows the athletic department and IPTAY to commission further studies and begin fundraising efforts. Included in the proposed facilities: 1) a rebuilt basketball arena on the current site of Littlejohn Coliseum; 2) a new academic center as part of the core campus project; 3) the construction of a letter winner’s area and meeting space at Memorial Stadium; 4) complete suite renovation at Memorial Stadium; 5) a new football operations facility; and 6) significant upgrades to the tennis complex.

“Clemson has consistently been in the forefront of athletic facilities and accommodations for our student athletes,” director of athletics Dan Radakovich said. “These projects provide a roadmap to continuing Clemson’s tradition of excellence in our facilities.”

The trustees approved a resolution to request issuance of state institution bonds not exceeding $23.7 million, to build Spaulding Paolozzi Center, home of Clemson’s architecture and historic preservation programs in Charleston

The board also approved a resolution to request issuance of state institution bonds, not exceeding $10 million, for an expansion to Freeman Hall, home of the industrial engineering department on campus.

The proposal for new Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in criminal justice gained the board’s acceptance. The degree programs will prepare students for careers in criminal justice and law enforcement as well as in policy, law and human rights.

In other action, the trustees voted to:

-- acquire 3.23 acres of the USDA vegetable lab property in Charleston

-- approve a PSA regulatory services lease for CAT building in Pendleton

-- accept the gift of one acre of land adjacent to the genetic center in Greenwood

The trustees elected John N. (Nicky) McCarter, Jr. of Hopkins as vice chairman of the board. He became a trustee in 2008. McCarter graduated from Clemson in 1980 with a B.S. degree in administration management, and he is president of Defender Services.
