Browns coach on Watson skipping Senior Bowl: "Won't hold it against him"

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson helped lead Clemson to their first National Championship since 1981 as Watson finished the comeback victory over Alabama going 36-for-56 for 420 yards and three passing touchdowns. He also had 21 rushes for 43 yards and a rushing score.

During all of that was a lot of big-time hits and punishment for a long 15 game season that most players do not have to endure. Watson decided to skip the Reese's Senior Bowl after the grueling season according to his agent and rest his body to prepare for the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine that begins on March 1.

Cleveland Head coach Hue Jackson would have coached Watson at the Senior Bowl on the South team and said that he would have liked to coached him in person.

"There are going to be other guys that are not participating either, so I won't hold it against him,' Jackson said via Cleveland.com. "I don't think that's the right thing to do. He's still a draftable player, there's still a process we have to go through to evaluate him and see if he can fit here with the Cleveland Browns."

Jackson understands that Watson has to make the best decision for himself for his own future.

"I think he's a high-character guy," Jackson said. "I think he's made of the right stuff. I don't think there's anything malicious about his decision. I just think he's like a lot of guys who have made this decision to do what's best for them."

In 2016, Watson completed 388 passes out of 579 attempts for 4593 yards and 41 passing touchdowns with 17 interceptions for an adjusted QBR of 84.9.
