Venables: "I would have stayed for a lot less"

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was interviewed by the local media after practice on Wednesday evening and discussed several topics including his new four-year contract extension that will keep him in TigerTown through the 2018 season, increasing his annual salary to 1.35 million beginning next season.

Venables said that he was very humbled, appreciative and grateful for the new contract extension from Clemson.

"With Coach Swinney and Dan Radakovich and President Clements and the board I couldn't be more appreciative, thankful, humble," said Venables. "Pinching myself. Incredible grateful for our coaches on our staff. You know our defensive staff is as good of group of guys and coaches I have worked with. It takes a group of them to have that kind of success. So for them to show that kind loyalty and appreciation and investment, I am eternally grateful. This as good as it gets to me in college football. We have everything we need. Anything a coach could possibly want we have it here and don't take a backseat to anybody. They didn't need to do that. I would have stayed for a lot less. (jokingly)"

Reporter: [You didn't tell them that.]

"They didn't ask. But I didn't expect them to do that. I was really, really humbled but very appreciative."

Venables helped lead Clemson's defensive resurgence last year all the way to the #1 total defense in the nation.
