Tommy Bowden says ACC has something to prove |
Former Clemson coach and current Fox Sports South analyst Tommy Bowden had some
interesting thoughts on his blog on Monday about the importance of the ACC to win against quality non-conference foes this season.
"The reason that some in the media have not given the ACC the respect they deserve is because of the overall strength of the conference," Bowden said. "This lack of respect mostly comes from the fact that the rest of the ACC has not been successful versus Power 5 non-conference opponents." However, the ACC conference went 3-1 against the SEC in rivalry games last season with Clemson's 37-32 win over South Carolina, Florida State's 27-2 win over Florida, and Louisville's 38-24 win over Kentucky. Georgia won 13-7 over Georgia Tech in the ACC's only blemish during rivalry week. In 2014, the ACC was 4-0 against the SEC [Power 5 conference] during rivalry week. "Clemson (2-5) and Georgia Tech (1-6) have combined for three wins in 7 years versus their natural Power 5 rivals South Carolina and Georgia," Bowden said. Florida State is 5-2 versus their rival Florida in the last seven years," Bowden said. But success in the first two weeks versus some strong Power 5 conference teams could re-establish some much-needed credibility with the national media."
