Swinney responds to Finebaum's "intoxicated fan base" comments |
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney made the rounds at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut on Monday and was eventually interviewed on ESPN Radio.
ESPN host Brad Edwards asked Swinney's thoughts on Paul Finebaum's pro-Alabama comments that Clemson was not the king of college football and that Clemson fans were the most intoxicated fan base in the country. "Oh my goodness. First of all, that is one of the things I love about being at Clemson," Swinney said. "I love our fans, and they are obviously incredibly passionate, but that's one of the things that makes Paul -- Paul. He's been doing this a long time, and he's passionate. It's all good. I said earlier today that we don't set out to be the kings of college football or any of that type stuff. We literally just try to be the best version of Clemson we can be week in and week out, year in and year out." Swinney finished up by saying that everyone is just aspiring to be like ESPN's Paul Finebaum. "We all know Paul's the king of college football and we're just aspiring to be like Paul one day. It's all good." Finebaum said the following comments on his show Friday about Clemson's fan base and coach Dabo Swinney. "How can you put Dabo in the same sentence as Nick Saban,” Finebaum asked a Clemson caller. "Who died and made Dabo Swinney the greatest coach of all-time? He’s got one national championship, ok? I don’t understand this. Since when did Clemson become the it school in the universe? I've never heard a more intoxicated fan base in my life." "Quit talking like you own college football," Finebaum said. Finebaum was getting a little heat on him from Clemson fans on Sunday night, and he tweeted out the following rebuttal. "Call me back when you've actually done something other than win one national championship," Finebaum posted. I guess it's time for Clemson fans to contact him already because the Tigers have actually won two national championships in the school's history. Call me back when you've actually done something other than win 1 national championship https://t.co/0uKO3Gr1Ng
