Swinney explains social media ban on the Jim Rome Show |
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was on the
Jim Rome Show on Thursday and discussed various subjects including the social-media ban that was brought about by his players in 2011.
“We aren’t doing anything different that we didn’t do starting in 2011,” Swinney told The Jim Rome Show. “My seniors come to me [2011], they call a meeting and say ‘Coach this is what we would like to do during the season. We’d like to have a team rule where there’s no participation in social media. What do you think?’ I was like, ‘Sounds great to me.’” Swinney did not think the social-media ban was a huge deal until some of the national media pundits brought attention to it. “The crazy thing about is this is the first time anybody’s ever asked me about that,” Swinney said of the social media banning. “I guess it’s because we’ve had success, and is one of those teams that people like. But we’ve been doing this for four years in a row, nobody’s said a word about it. And all the sudden you have a little success, and the scrutiny comes. This was player instituted. It had nothing to do with me, and we’ve followed it along each year.” Swinney knows that social media is a prominent thing but thinks that his football team has remained focused without it during the season. “I don’t have a problem with social media; I think it’s a great thing,” Swinney said. “All I know is the experience we’ve had here, with what we’ve seen the last several years during the season only, I think has really helped our football team stay focused, I really do. Maybe that’s just me.”
