Sporting News lists Brownell as candidate for Memphis |
The Memphis basketball head coaching job is now open as it tries to fill the spot to replace Josh Pastner who is the new basketball coach at Georgia Tech.
Sporting News released their candidates for the vacant position on Monday, and Clemson's Brad Brownell was on the list. "Brownell has done solid work at Clemson, including a 10-8 record in the ACC last season that included victories over Duke, Louisville, and Syracuse, but he has had a difficult time sustaining momentum against a loaded league," Sportingnews.com said. "Brownell established his coaching skill while at UNC-Wilmington and Wright State, and he twice has topped 20 wins at Clemson. In an environment where major experience appears to be among the most valued commodities for athletic directors — see the relocations of Kevin Stallings, Travis Ford and, for that matter, Pastner — Brownell would seem to fit the bill." Clemson concluded this past season with a 17-14 record and the Tigers missed the postseason for the fourth time in six years under Brownell. His overall coaching record is 274-172 (.614) with a 107-87 record (.552) at Clemson. The other candidates listed were Gregg Marshall, Penny Hardaway, Eric Musselman, Steve Forbes, Kermit Davis, Andy Kennedy, LeVelle Moton and Tony Madlock.
