Elliott credits Swinney for Cain to Renfrow pass

by - Assoc. Editor -

Clemson Co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said on Monday that head coach Dabo Swinney came up with the play where receiver Deon Cain made a 35 pass to Hunter Renfrow to set up the first Clemson touchdown against Wake.

"I got to give Coach Swinney credit on that one. That was his play," Elliott said. "He came to us I think on Tuesday and said he saw an opportunity for that, and he was right because Wake Forest was very aggressive attacking your perimeter screen game. You got to have the right situation. You got to have guys that are going to fly up, that are really going to be aggressive on trying to take away the screens. We had some success up at Syracuse throwing the spot screen out there to Artavis (Scott). Watching Wake going into the game their number 30, their outside linebacker was very aggressive at the point of attack so we thought we would have an opportunity."

Elliott said that the coaching staff showed Cain some of the throws by former receiver Sammy Watkins that were picked off as a what not to do.

"We knew Deon's background as a quarterback being able to throw it," Elliott said. "We made sure we went in and showed him Sammy Watkins' throws to make sure we put it more on a line and didn't float it up there. So he had an opportunity to see some of the mistakes we made in the past with that play."

Quarterback Deshaun Watson gave his review of Cain's throw.

"Great ball," Watson said. "He kind of under threw him. If he would have throw him out a little more he would have scored. I think he was just excited to be able to showcase his arm and being an athlete capable of making those plays."
