Chad Morris on Clemson's title: "I'm just so proud"

by - Assoc. Editor -

Former Clemson offensive coordinator and SMU head coach Chad Morris was interviewed by Fox 4 News about Clemson's National Championship win and Morris shared that he was extremely excited for the entire program including Dabo Swinney, the staff, the players including quarterback Deshaun Watson, and all of the loyal Tiger fans.

"I was just so excited for that program and that university," Morris said. "What a great, great staff. What Coach Swinney is able to do, the vision he had and has is just remarkable. I'm so excited for the entire staff, all those players. So much of my time was invested there and building on the vision of what Coach Swinney set. Obviously the recruitment of Deshaun and being a part of his life for as long as I have. As a matter of fact he and I still talk every other day. To see him come back and win that game in that fashion and all those players. That fanbase. All of Tiger Nation. It was very special. It was very exciting and very much earned. They had to earn everything they got. I was very, very excited for them."

Morris had a feeling that Deshaun Watson would be able to get it done in the 4th quarter against Alabama.

"I knew when they got the ball back to Clemson for the third time in that fourth quarter without Alabama scoring any points I felt like this was it," Morris said. "There was no denying them at that point. I think the first two times they got the ball back they had sack on first down on Deshaun and they wound up punting. But the third time they got the ball back at the 6:16 mark I said to myself at that point this is over. This is fixing to be done. As Coach Swinney said it was destiny. It was gonna happen. I think he shared the love of those players and that university has for its football program is remarkable. So when they threw the pass to Hunter Renfrow I was just so pleased. Just so much hard work for that staff and what was so close a year ago and what has been building over the course of the last five years was remarkable. I thought it was really neat when Ben Boulware mentioned all the former players that they were a part of it. I was texting with Sammy (Watkins) and Tajh (Boyd) and DeAndre (Hopkins) and Andre Ellington during that game and saying 'Hey guys this has your finger prints all over it'. Just excitement. I'm just so proud of what they were able to do and finish it off in the manner they did."
