USA Today writer thinks Clemson is overrated |
Some bulletin board material for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers.
USA TODAY Sports' Dan Wolken is not impressed with the No. 3 Clemson football team through the early portion of the 2018 season. Wolken believes that the Tigers are not worthy of their lofty ranking and shouldn't even be ranked in the top five. "Clemson has looked a little bit dodgy early in the season," he said. "The second half versus Texas A&M - sure maybe you can write it off as a tough road environment and hanging on at the end. Then against Georgia Southern, really they should've been able to put away and the score was 24-7 in the fourth quarter. They had not wrapped it up by any means. They had to keep their starters in. They were able to make it 38-7 at the end, but it was not a convincing performance." Wolken warns that the Yellow Jackets might have something for the Tigers (16.5 point spread) in the rivalry matchup. "Clemson has to go Georgia Tech this weekend and sometimes that's been a tricky game," he said. "They've had trouble there in the past. I think they win, but I want to see more from Clemson. Right now they're good against the run and not great against the pass. They're allowing too many third down conversions. Offensively they're still trying to find an identity behind either Trevor Lawrence or Kelly Bryant at quarterback. It just doesn't look like it's quite clicked yet. Clemson is very good. Maybe they will be right there at the end, but for now, I do not believe they are a top-5 team."
