Two Tigers make Heisman contenders list |
Two Clemson players made the top-13 of
NFL.com’s top Heisman candidates list Tuesday.
Kelly Bryant checks in at No. 5, while Travis Etienne is at No. 13 in the 18-man list. “(Bryant’s) an exciting dual-threat quarterback like (Deshaun) Watson was,” NFL.com draft reporter Chase Goodbread writes, “but will need to improve significantly on a 13-8 TD-INT ratio if he is to contend for the Heisman. Surprisingly, coach Dabo Swinney said after spring practice that the QB job is an open competition, but it's hard to imagine the quarterback who won 12 games and an ACC title last year won't be back under center.” West Virginia quarterback Will Grier leads the group after 3,490 passing yards and 34 touchdown passes to 12 interceptions last season, followed by Stanford running back Bryce Love (2017 Heisman finalist; 1,973 rushing yards/17 TDs) and Michigan’s Shea Patterson (Ole Miss transfer; missed final five games 2017 season due to injury). The only scheduled opponent with a player on the list is Florida State in sophomore running back Cam Akers (930 rushing yards/7 TDs last season). In January, Bryant was listed with 15-1 Heisman odds (tied for ninth best), and Etienne, 35-1 (T-17). Five-star freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence was listed as a Heisman contender in April by College Football News.
