by - Staff Writer -

Former Clemson defensive end Da'Quan Bowers announced his retirement from pro football on Friday.

Bowers last played in 2017 for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League, posting 18 tackles, seven sacks and an interception. He had his contract extended through 2019 in March.

"After months of prayer and thinking, I have decided to hang up my cleats," Bowers posted on Facebook Friday. "Football has taken me places I never imagined. I’m at PEACE with this decision as it is what is Best for ME. I look forward to this journey as I embrace the challenges to chase my new goals outside of being a player.. I’m thankful to GOD who has allowed me to play this game at a professional level with the talents he blessed me with, my fans, my family, my friends and everyone who has supported me through this journey over the past 20 years...

"I’m forever Grateful to the Tampa Bay Bucs for giving a little boy from Bamberg SC a chance to live a dream!! Edmonton Eskimos I thank you for embracing me with open arms and signing me to a 2 year extension this past March after only a season with your team..I am forever in debt to the game of football."

Bowers was drafted in the second round of the 2011 draft by Tampa Bay and saw action in 53 games over five seasons, totaling seven sacks and 46 solo tackles in and around missed time due to injury.

At Clemson, Bowers earned All-American honors as well as the Bronko Nagurski (best defensive player), Ted Hendricks (best defensive end) and ACC defensive player of the year awards. He led the nation with 15.5 sacks and 26 tackles for loss in 2010.

Bowers was rated the No. 1 prospect in the 2008 class by ESPN and the No. 2 prospect by Rivals and Scout.com out of Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School.
