Clemson, two opponents among top-10 most talented rosters |
Clemson will play two teams in the regular season with more talented rosters by the numbers.
The folks at 247Sports.com updated their "Team Talent Composite" Thursday and peg Clemson (853.65 cumulative rating) as the ninth-most star-studded group. Among upcoming opponents, that's behind Florida State (No. 5; 924.97) and Auburn (No. 8; 866.17). The ranking only updates teams' current rosters after transfers, dismissals and the like and doesn't account for how that talent has developed. For example, 2016 College Football Playoff participant Washington is No. 25 overall and 2016 5-7 Arizona State is No. 23. When it comes to depth, 247Sports has Clemson tied with Texas for the lowest amount of nationally-rated prospects among top-19 schools (77). Miami has the lowest in the top-40 (73) at No. 20 overall. Alabama (995.81) and Ohio State (995.51) are a clear 1-2 nationally talent-wise with the next-best not within 60 rating points (Southern Cal, 934). Alabama has seven more five-star prospects than any single team in college football. Clemson has one more five-star prospect than Auburn (six to five), but eight less four-star-rated players. Outside of FSU and Auburn, South Carolina is the next-most talented school on the Tigers' slate, at No. 27 overall (696.88), ahead of Virginia Tech (No. 33; 661.73), Louisville (No. 36; 641.85) and NC State (No. 44; 609.76). Opening opponent Kent State has 11 3-star prospects and ranks 119th out of the ranking that also factors in Football Championship Subdivision teams.
