Greenville, S.C.—Senior Carson Young fired a final round 67 to take medalist honors by one shot and lead Clemson to the team title on Sunday at the Furman Invitational at Greenville, S.C. Clemson won the event by 14 shots over USC-Aiken, the fourth consecutive tournament victory for the Tigers and coach Larry Penley.

Clemson shot a 279 score on Sunday to finish at 29-under par 835, a tournament team record for low score versus par. USC Aiken finished second with an 849 score, while Chattanooga and Georgia Southern were tied for third at 855. It was the fourth straight win for Clemson at the Furman Invitational. Clemson had not played in the event since 2012, but won that year and 2010 and 2011.

Young’s 67 on Sunday tied his career low round and his 205 total for 54 holes was a career best for three rounds for the native of Pendleton, S.C. Young’s 54 holes included 17 birdies and three eagles. He had just four eagles in his career entering this weekend, then made three over the weekend, including eagles on consecutive holes on Saturday, the first Clemson golfer in history to accomplish that. He played the par five holes at 14-under par, a big reason Clemson was a tournament best 43-under-par for the event.

The key to Young’s victory on Sunday was an eagle on the par five 15th hole. Young’s second shot landed just off the left front of the green. Using a lofted club, he chipped in from 50 feet for the eagle. It was the second time in three holes he chipped in from off the green, as he also accomplished the feat on the par four 13th hole.

The victory was the first in college for Young, who was the South Carolina Amateur Champion in 2014 and 2016. His victory this past summer at the South Carolina Amateur was by one shot over Andrew Novak of Wofford. He beat Novak again by just one shot in winning this weekend. Wes Gosselin of Chattanooga also was one shot back of Young.

Young had plenty of support in the team race. Doc Redman had a 69 on Sunday and finished with a 208 total for three rounds, good enough for fourth place, his fifth top five finish of the year.

Sophomore Bryson Nimmer also had a 69 on Sunday and finished one shot back of Redman at 209, good enough for fifth place. It marked the first time this year Clemson had three of the top five players in a tournament.

William Nottingham finished 14th with a 214 total for 54 holes while Austin Langdale was even par 216 for the 54 holes and finished 27th. Josh Fickes had a 215 while playing as an individual and finished 23rd with a one under par score.

Clemson will next be in action April 7-9 when it plays host to the Clemson Invitational at the Cliff’s at Keowee Falls in Sunset, S.C.
