Clemson Athletic HOF to Induct Seven in 2014

CLEMSON, S.C. – Six former student-athletes and a former administrator comprise Clemson’s Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014 announced Wednesday by Bill D’Andrea, Executive Director of the Tiger Letterwinners’ Association.

The 2014 inductees include Mike Gandolfo (men’s tennis), Nnamdi Nwokocha (men’s soccer), Dwight Rainey (administrator, former assistant basketball coach), Jim Riggs (football), Duane Ross (men’s track and field), Ed Scott (men’s basketball) and Shekera Weston (women’s track and field).

Induction weekend is scheduled for Sept. 26-27, with the inductees being honored at the Clemson-North Carolina football game.

Gandolfo (Tennis, 1977-80) was Clemson’s first All-American in men’s tennis and earned National Player of the Year honors in 1980.

Nwokocha (Soccer, 1979-81), a two-time All-American, remains Clemson’s all-time leading point scorer with 171 and is second in school history with 74 career goals.

Rainey (Administrator) was instrumental in the building and improvements of many athletic facilities on the Clemson campus.

Riggs (Football, 1983-86) was one of the school’s best tight ends on the gridiron and enjoyed a six-year professional career with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ross (Track & Field, 1992-95) was an Olympian, a national champion and a seven-time All-American.

Scott (Basketball, 1999-03) was named one of the top 25 players in Clemson history when the school celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2012.

Weston (Track and Field, 1997-01) was a National Champion and a 10-time All-American.

Gandolfo’s accomplishments:

•Named to ACC 50-Year Anniversary tennis team.

•Named ACC Tournament MVP in 1979 and 1980.

•1980 ITA Senior Player-of-the-Year

•All-American in 1980

•ACC Champion at number one singles in 1979 and 1980

Nwokocha’s accomplishments:

•Named to ACC 50-Year Anniversary Team

•1979 ACC Player-of-the-Year as a freshman

•1979 and 1981 NSCAA All-American.

•Led ACC in goal scoring from 1979-81

Rainey’s accomplishments:

•Senior Associate Athletic Director from 1975-2007

•Member of the men’s basketball coaching staff under Bill Foster from 1975-82

•Organized and planned numerous ACC and NCAA Championships at Clemson

•Responsible for capital projects that included design and budgeting and assisted with the planning of renovations with nearly every Clemson athletic facility

Riggs’ accomplishments:

•1985-86 First-Team All-ACC

•Played on 1983 and 1986 ACC Championship teams

•Played six years in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals including a Super Bowl appearance in 1989

Ross’ accomplishments:

•Named to ACC 50-Year Anniversary team

•Seven-time All-American, third highest total in Clemson history

•Five-time ACC Champion

•Set the Clemson record in the 110 high hurdles with time of 13.32

•1994-95 named Clemson Athlete of the Year

•1995 NCAA Outdoor Champion in the 110 High Hurdles

•2004 Olympian

Scott’s accomplishments:

•2002-03 First-Team All-ACC

•Ranks second in Clemson history with 595 assists

•One of only nine players in ACC history with at least 1000 points, 500 assists and 400 rebounds

Weston’s accomplishments:

•Named to ACC 50-Year Anniversary Team

•2001 National Champion Outdoor 4x400m Relay

•2001 All-American Outdoor 4x400m Relay, 1st Place

•2001 Women’s ACC Champion Outdoor 400m and 4x100m Relay

•1999 Women’s ACC Champion Indoor 200m and 400m
