Tigers Hope To Reverse Trend

by - Correspondent -

When Tommy Bowden was hired as the head coach at Clemson, the Clemson and Florida State rivalry developed a little more spice. The rivalry has become more competitive on the field in the last three years, as the Tigers have won two of three. The Tigers have not been able to win many battles against the Seminoles in recruiting.

Clemson is hoping to win a few more Signing Day battles with the Seminoles. Florida State got the last laugh in 2005, when Geno Hayes put on the garnet and gold. Clemson did successfully land in-state products Josh Miller and Rendrick Taylor over the Seminoles, however both were early commitments.

This year the Tigers really only have about six players remaining on the board. Four of the six could come down to Clemson and Florida State. Three of the six are visiting Florida State this weekend, which normally spells doom.

Last year, Hayes and South Carolina’s #1 prospect Jamie Robinson visited the Seminoles the last weekend in January. Clemson was the favorite with Hayes and a strong contender with Robinson heading into the weekend. After the weekend. Hayes and Robinson signed with Florida State.

This year CJ Spiller, Marcus Sims, and Ochuko Jenije are visiting FSU in the final weekend of January. Clemson has left nothing on the table with all three. All three prospects were very impressed on their official visits to Clemson.

Sims and Jenije are teammates, and they could be a package deal. Spiller is weighing his options between Clemson, Florida, Southern Cal, Miami, and Florida State. By our accounts, Miami and Southern Cal are on the outside looking in with Spiller.

Spiller and Sims are not the only running backs Clemson is recruiting against the Seminoles for. Lumberton, Mississippi’s Terry Grant has the Tigers and ‘Noles on his final list.

Grant and Spiller will not attend the same school. Grant is also giving strong consideration to Southern Miss. The Tigers are looking to land one of the three running backs. The Tigers have narrowed the gap on the field with the Seminoles, but we will have to wait until February 1 to see if the Tigers can win the head-to-head recruiting battles.
