Who has really been impressive at the Shrine Bowl?

Some players do not live up to the hype, and some do. You can put Carl Johnson in the category of those that do. Johnson has NFL written all over him, and he will be an immediate impact at Florida. Last year, we said Mohammed Massaquoi was the best player on the field, and despite injuries he made significant contributions for the SEC Champions. We feel Johnson will make that type of impact for Florida next season.

Ricky Sapp as we have documented has been impressive this week, and he will continue to get better as he adds size. He wants to be 240 by the time he enrolls at Clemson, and he should be able to maintain very good speed for a defensive end at that weight.

Were you surprised Medlin and Hairston were offered?

At the beginning of the week, it did not appear the two would be offered. We knew the coaches would be on hand to watch them in person. Both were pretty impressive once we saw them. They both passed the eye test, and then they passed the field test. Watching the college coaches in attendance, it became pretty clear the two players were on track to earn some offers. You can never say never in recruiting. Both of these players have just barely tapped their potentials.

Do you see Clemson over-signing in this class?

It is possible, but the board has been pretty much narrowed down right now. If things go really well, they will over-sign. The class sits at 15 right now, and technically they can go up to 22. If the players are there for the taking, then they will take them. Attrition is always a factor in the off-season. For example, right now there is one player who has a less than 10 percent chance of returning to the team next year. It is going to be fun to follow down the stretch.

How do you see the basketball team favoring in Puerto Rico?

It is always difficult for teams to play right after exams. Talent wise in my opinion Clemson is the most talented team in the field. It will be a difficult tournament for the Tigers to win, but this is certainly there best chance to win one in quite awhile. Cliff Hammonds had his best shooting night of the year the last time out, and his scoring will be needed for the Tigers to win. Vernon Hamilton and James Mays will be the key. If they play well, I see the Tigers coming home with a championship.
