Is Rob Spence still an offensive genius?
Coach Spence, in my opinion, was the right hire. He has stuck to his guns, and this offense has played well. Boston College did not allow this offense to get any rhythm in the second half. Clemson only ran 24 plays in the second half against Boston College. There is some questions Coach Spence needs to answer, but Boston College deserves credit as well. Nobody was saying Coach Spence was too conservative, when he called a run on third and seven down three at Maryland. In the coaching business, you are set up for criticism. No one cares how conservative you are when you win. Do I think they were too conservative against Boston College, yes, but I also think they were just a couple missed assignments away from hitting some big plays and winning the game.
Is DeAndre McDaniel going to McIntosh us?
I do not get that feeling. If McDaniel decides to go else where, I do not see him playing the cloak and dagger game McIntosh did. He has been very honest to this point. FSU will make a push, but he really likes Clemson. If Clemson hits the seven win mark, I feel pretty safe in saying they hang on to McDaniel. Less, and they may have some work to do.
What is up with Roman Fry?
In my opinion, Fry has almost been punished for his unselfish attitude. He agreed to back up Dustin Fry at center, and it has cost him playing time. He will be starting at left guard this week, and this gives Clemson its best five starting. Roman has a great attitude, and I really hope he gets a chance to play well. He deserves credit for keeping his head up and working head despite not seeing the playing time he had earned. He was a starter coming out of the spring, and he was lost in the shuffle the first four games. He stands a chance to lock up his left guard position on Saturday.
Will Clemson shift to any man coverage?
You never say never, but last Saturday, I thought if not now, when. Clemson had much better athletes than Boston College and stayed in zone. I believe Coach Koenning will improve this defense each week, but some of the guys seem out of place playing strictly zone. His defense as promised has created turnovers, but they have a ways to go. The schedule is a big reason why they are 12th in total defense in the ACC. This group will stand to benefit from a stiff test early. To answer your question, I expect Clemson to continue to play zone coverage.
Who is the answer on kickoff returns?
I am not sure there is an answer this year. Ray Ray McElrathbey may be a good one in the future, but you do not burn a redshirt for a kick returner. I think Tyler Grisham may be a good one. He struggled holding onto the football early in camp, or he may have had a chance. The common answer from fans is Tye Hill. Hill could be an excellent kick returner, but you have to catch it to return it. He does not have great hands or he would already be back there. Look for Coleman and Kelvin Grant to handle return duties the rest of the season with Stuckey returning punts.
