Bowden Unveils Camouflage

Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden had praised the competition and depth of his team throughout fall camp. Last week, Coach Bowden stated he saw no reason in killing the competition of his team by releasing a depth chart. On Monday, Clemson SID Tim Bourret released a depth chart to the media, but Coach Bowden downplayed the significance of the depth chart.

“It is a trick. I think we are going to release a depth chart later on. That thing out there now is camouflage just like theirs (Texas A&M). I didn’t release it, you all asked for one, so Tim released one,” said Bowden.

The competition is still evident in the minds of the players. Junior running back Reggie Merriweather is listed as the starter, but when he was asked about being the starter, he quickly responded to the reporters.

“Thursday...We will find out Thursday. I am just excited to get started, but we will know who starts on Thurday,” said Merriweather.

As the team continues preparations for Texas A&M, Coach Bowden noted his youth on defense.

“I was on the practice field today, and I was looking at our second team defense. There was eight or nine redshirt or true freshmen out there. We talk about the depth, and I like the depth. The quality of depth is just inexperienced.”

Coach Bowden joked as far as controlling the emotions of the younger players for the first game.

“I told them I was going to check their pants to make sure they were clean, make sure they didn’t soil them. There will be some emotion. They will make freshmen mistakes, but as a head coach you have to account for freshmen mistakes. I just want them to go out and play hard and have fun.”

Notes

- Tight end Bobby Williamson went down with an ankle injury in practice today. His status is not certain, but the injury is thought to be serious. Cole Downer, Kelvin Grant, and Donnell Clark all returned to practice on Monday.
