Texas quarterback talks Clemson offer

Receiving that first offer to play college football is always a high school football player’s dream, but Clemson took one Texas quarterback by surprise Monday morning.

out of Mesquite (TX) West Mesquite discovered via Twitter that the Tigers had given him his first collegiate offer.

After ‘congratulations’ messages started pouring in, Virgil told TigerNet that he took to Twitter to find out that his coach had announced Clemson’s offer via the social media site.

“I was sitting down in class and was getting these text messages and people were telling me congratulations and stuff like that,” Virgil told TigerNet Wednesday evening. “I didn’t know what they were talking about, and then I looked on Twitter and I saw where my coach said I had gotten my first offer.”

High school athletes can often stress about receiving college offers, and Virgil said that the weight of the world has been lifted off his shoulders with the offer.

“With it being my first offer, it felt like a lot of weight had been lifted off my shoulders, like the monkey was off my back. It was overwhelming,” Virgil said.

Virgil is familiar with Clemson after he said he researched the university for a school project.

“I know a lot about Clemson,” he said. “I actually had to do a project for a class stating what I like about a certain school and I picked Clemson. They have what I want to major in – sports management – and I know at Clemson they have great athletics and academics. They are like a family around there. I know it’s a good place.”

Virgil didn’t have a favorite team growing up, but he said that he followed Clemson in 2012 and realized that those who wear the paw on their helmet carry themselves with a great amount of pride.

“I didn’t have a favorite team growing up,” Virgil said. “I just really love college football. I’ve watched Clemson, and I can tell that all the players and coaches are dedicated and the fans are dedicated. They are a tough football team and they never give up. They carry themselves with so much pride at that school.”

According to Virgil, West Mesquite runs a similar offense to that of offensive coordinator Chad MorrisChad Morris

and he said that he would love to play that style of football at the collegiate level.

“I know the kind of offense they run at Clemson because we run it here,” he said. “I think I would fit into Clemson’s offense very well because I run it at my high school. It would be a fun offense to play in.”

Virgil started at quarterback as a freshman and almost tripled his stats from his freshman year to his sophomore year. As a freshman, he threw for 758 yards and eight touchdowns. His sophomore season, he passed for 2300 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 400 yards and five touchdowns.

Virgil received his second offer from Missouri on Wednesday and is a teammate of 2014 Clemson commit, Dylan Sumner-Gardner Dylan Sumner-Gardner
