Tankersley highlights final day of Clemson camp |
CLEMSON – The final day of Dabo Swinney’s 2012 camp started out under cool and cloudy skies and ended under the heat of bright blue skies, but there was one constant at the football practice fields behind Jervey in the form of a Clemson commitment.

out of Silver Bluff High School in Aiken was on hand with his father, older brother and younger sister, and the 6-foot 2, 190-pounder showed continual glimpses of why the Clemson coaches are so high on the speedster. Tankersley’s father, George, said his son was worried about playing defensive back on the collegiate level because he has played a lot of quarterback and wide receiver in high school, but Tankersley showed explosiveness and good cover skills during all of the drills. Playing safety in a Clemson scheme during one particular drill, Tankersley read the correct route and stepped in front of the receiver for an interception [he has tremendous hands] and replicated the play a few minutes later. At this point, it looks like he could play nickel, corner or safety, but if he continues to fill out he could wind up as a pure safety by the time he has been on campus a year or two. He has the athleticism to play any of the positions, however, and he picked up what the coaches were teaching on Thursday extremely quick. Speaking of defensive backs, keep your eye on Travelers Rest (SC) defensive back A.J. Starks, a 2013 prospect that doesn’t have any offers – yet. Starks was brought to the Clemson camp by his head coach, Rob Searfoss, who had Starks at South Carolina’s camp yesterday. Searfoss said he got home and went out to dinner with his wife, and when he checked his phone later he had missed four calls from South Carolina coaches. Starks grew up as a Clemson fan, however, and he told TigerNet after the camp that he plans to take in as many Clemson home games as possible this season and bring in his family for an official visit. Judging by the numbers of coaches who made sure they took down all of his info, Starks will be another strong defensive back we will be hearing from again. Another 2013 prospect that will be heard from again is linebacker Corey Vereen out of West Orange High School in Winter Park, Florida. Vereen is 6-2, 230-pounder that visited Clemson for Junior Day back in April and fell in love with the coaches and the campus. Vereen spent part of the morning working with the juniors, but was so disruptive [in a good way] that Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele moved him in with the seniors. Vereen is still raw in many aspects, but has the size and speed to be a solid Division I player. Vereen will be at Florida St. on Friday, but said he hopes to receive a Clemson offer soon. of Goose Creek already boasts a Clemson offer, and he showed why during the camp. Terry has exceptional speed coming out of his cuts, looks like he has a solid vertical jump and soft hands. The 2013 prospect told TigerNet following camp that the Clemson coaches have encouraged him to do more research on his position, and figure out which receiver slot he would want to play at Clemson – whether in the slot or outside.
