Elite offensive tackle talks "crazy cool" Clemson visit

by - Senior Writer -

Jake Fruhmorgen wanted to get a feel for the life of a college student at Clemson and got more than he bargained for.

The 4-star offensive tackle out of Tampa (FL) Plant visited Clemson earlier this month for one of the early junior days, and came away with a good feeling about the school.

“It went well. Clemson has a really cool campus, and the atmosphere there is different than most schools,” Fruhmorgen told TigerNet. “It is a cool school to see, and I liked it a lot. It exceeded my expectations, and it seemed like a place I would like to live. It seemed like a place where I would have good teammates and good coaches and that it would be a good place to be.”

Fruhmorgen boasts 30-plus offers – from big programs all over the country – and said that at this point he doesn’t have any favorites but that Clemson definitely stood out.

“I am not big on favorites and how nice each school is,” he said. “I went to Clemson and I liked how their players were working out and getting stronger. I liked the campus because it’s not too big and not too small. It is a good college atmosphere. It was a crazy cool place. It is special. Coach Swinney is always saying the hard part is not getting to Clemson, it’s getting there and not liking it. They are up there with Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Michigan.”

He then said that offensive line coach Robbie CaldwellRobbie Caldwell

and Swinney had a special message for him.

“They preached a lot about how they are re-grouping on the offensive line, and that guys coming in will have a chance to play earlier,” he said. “They told me it would be a good place for a kid like me, and that a spot at Clemson wouldn’t be open forever.”

Fruhmorgen said he will take other visits this spring, including a return trip to Clemson for spring practice – and will also go to the school where his dad played. John Fruhmorgen played at Alabama before a trip to the NFL.

“My dad has been a lot of help on and off the field, and he is always telling me he was recruited more than I have been,” he said. “I always listen to him, and he has a lot of connections, and he really helped me develop at a young age. I have to give him a lot of credit for my success.”

Despite the Alabama connection, Fruhmorgen said that every other school has the same chance as the Crimson Tide.

“I wouldn’t say that they have the edge. It’s wide open,” he said. “I’ve actually never been to an Alabama game, and I wasn’t raised on ‘Roll Tide Roll.’ I didn’t grow up in it as much as people think I did. I like it a lot, and not just because of my dad. But Clemson seems like a good place for me, and I was pleasantly surprised.”
