Clemson Receiver Class Could Be Best Ever

CLEMSON, SC -- The end is finally in sight for Marlboro County High School wide receiver Tymere Zimmerman.

It’s been over a year since he committed to play football at Clemson. He knew enough about the recruiting process that he wanted to cut it short. He thought committing to Clemson would keep the phone quiet.

“When I first committed I thought the recruiting process would slow down,” he said. “But it got worse.”

The day after he committed he arrived at school to find South Carolina assistant coach Todd Fitch waiting for him. College assistants don’t give up quite that easy, Zimmerman found out.

He eventually became what is know as a “soft commitment,” which is another word for a high school football player that can’t make up his mind. No shame there – it’s a tough decision.

Eventually it came down to Clemson and North Carolina, with the prospect of being able to play basketball at North Carolina making Zimmerman think a little longer. But on January 29th, a week and a half before signing day and over a year since his first commitment, his re-committed himself to Clemson.

Wednesday, he’s expected to sign a letter of intent to play football at Clemson along with approximately 30 other high school football players.

“When I first saw Clemson’s offense, I knew that I would be able to catch the ball,” said Zimmerman. “I’m not going there to showcase somebody else. I felt I could fit in.”

If the signatures of Roscoe Crosby and Ben Hall (neither have committed to Clemson) come across the fax machine in the McFadden Building Wednesday morning, the Tigers will have signed a stellar class at receiver.

The Tigers received a commitment from Richland Northeast wide receiver Airese Currie on Monday. He’s rated by SuperPrep as the No. 4 prospect at wide receiver in the country and No. 21 prospect overall.

Crosby is rated No. 3 at receiver and No. 20 overall. “I felt like Clemson was where my heart was at,” said Currie, who chose the Tigers over Georgia. “If I work hard at practice the coaches said it wouldn’t be a problem getting into the immediate plans.”

Most of the players signing a letter of intent today to attend Clemson won’t see the field for at least one more season. However, Currie and Crosby, if he signs, would likely step on the field immediately along with Zimmerman, who is No. 31 overall with SuperPrep.

Lamar wide receiver Derrick Higgins is also expected to sign with Clemson today. Higgins caught 80 passes this season for 1271 yards. He scored 26 touchdowns (19 receiving, 4 interception returns and 3 rushing). In the state championship game against Ninety-Six, he caught 20 passes for 294 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s a great athlete with a lot of skills about him,” said Lamar coach J.R. Grant.

Grant said Higgins compares favorably to Lamar’s two other high-profile alumni – Levon Kirkland and John Abraham. “Derek’s talent is a lot more natural,” he said. “Levon was an over-achiever and John played one year and took off in college.”
