Top Ten Battles
When Clemson hosts Georgia on August 31 it will mark just the eighth game in school history that will feature two top ten teams.
It will be just the second game in Death Valley that will feature two top ten teams.
The Tigers are 3-4 in those games.
Below is a review of the previous six games where Clemson and the opponent came into the game ranked in the top ten:
The first time this happened was October 3, 1959 when the Tigers faced Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Clemson entered the game ranked sixth while the Yellow Jackets came in ranked seventh. The home team beat Clemson 16-6. The Tigers finished 9-2, won the ACC and finished 11th in the country which tied the school record at the time for the highest finish in school history. Tech went on to a disappointing 6-5 campaign.
On November 7, 1981 two ACC teams ranked in the top ten in the nation played each other for the first time in the history of the conference. Clemson came to Chapel Hill ranked second in the country while the Tar Heels were ranked eighth. Clemson went on to an exciting 10-8 victory on its way to a 12-0 record, an ACC title and a national championship. North Carolina went 10-2 and finished the season ranked eighth. The Tar Heels were one of three top ten teams the Tigers beat that season.
On January 1, 1981 Clemson came into the Orange Bowl ranked number-one and faced off against fourth-ranked Nebraska. Clemson beat the Huskers 22-15 to win the national title and finish 12-0. Nebraska finished 9-3 and ranked ninth.
On September 17, 1988 Clemson played the only game ever in Death valley that featured two top ten teams. The Tigers entered the game ranked third in the country while Florida State was ranked 10th. The Seminoles pulled off one of the most famous plays in college football history in the Puntrooskie and beat the Tigers 24-21. Clemson went on to a 10-2 record and finished eighth in the country. FSU finished 11-1 and finished third in the nation.
On January 1, 1988 Clemson faced Oklahoma in another bowl game that featured two top ten teams. The Tigers entered the game ranked ninth and the Sooners came into the game ranked 10th. Dexter Davis batted away a pass in the endzone on the final play of the game to help lead the Tigers to a 13-6 win over Oklahoma. Clemson finished the season 10-2 and ranked eighth. Oklahoma finished 9-3 and ranked 14th.
November 4, 2000 Clemson went to Florida State to face the fourth ranked Seminoles. Clemson came into the game ranked 10th. FSU blistered the Tigers 54-7 that night behind Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke. Clemson went on to a 9-3 season and finished 14th in the country. The Noles went 11-2 and finished fourth in the nation.
Last season Clemson went to Tallahassee on September 22, 2013. The Tigers came into the game ranked 10th while FSU was ranked fourth. The Seminoles came from behind and beat Clemson 49-37. The Tigers finished the season 11-2 and ranked ninth. FSU went 12-2 and finished eighth in the final poll.
