South Carolina Review

Order restored.

What we saw Saturday in Death Valley is what a lot of us grew up watching...Clemson was physically better than South Carolina.  Even South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier agreed when he said, "Clemson was better than us. They played better and they coached better. Give those guys credit, they are better than us. They are a better team than we are. Simple as that.”

The 35-17 game will be remembered for several things including Deshaun WatsonDeshaun Watson

and a suffocating defense.

Watson played with a torn ACL and was the offensive spark the Tigers lacked when he was out.  The true freshman went 14 of 19 for 269 yards with two touchdowns through the air and two on the ground.  It was obvious Watson was not 100 percent but his gutsy performance inspired his teammates.

Gallman played well in the second half of the season but he saved his best for last.  The red-shirt freshman had 196 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.  His physical presence was a major factor.

Scott had two fantastic touchdowns and tallied 185 yards on seven receptions.  His two big plays were a major factor in the route.

You also have to give credit to the offensive line for clearing holes and keeping the Gamecocks off of Watson.  South Carolina did not have a great defensive line but the Tigers' offensive line had been much maligned throughout this season.

Defensively, the Tigers held the Gamecocks to a season low 17 points and 63 yards rushing.  In fact, Clemson out-rushed South Carolina 266 to 63.  Carolina was held to 1.9 yards per carry.  The Tigers held USC to 339 total yards.  The 63 yards rushing were 116 yards below the Gamecocks season average.  The 339 yards of total offense were 122 yards below their average and the 17 points were 17.8 points below their season average.

had two sacks and forced a fumble, the Gamecocks only turnover of the game.  The defensive line was a major part in holding South Carolina running back Mike Davis to 39 yards on 12 carries.

In all, Clemson had 13 tackles behind the Gamecock line of scrimmage.

The Tigers were better on both lines of scrimmage and physically was the superior team.  If anything the game was not as close as the scoreboard indicated.

This win will be remembered for records by seniors like Beasley and the rest of the senior class.  But it will also be remembered for the freshmen like Watson, Gallman and Scott.  After the game Watson told some observers, "1-0."  Maybe a new streak is upon us.
