Monday was another monumental day for Clemson's football program and recruiting efforts.  The Tiger staff secured a commitment from another of the finest high school football players in the country.

Ray-Ray McCloud III is a 5’9”, 176-pound athlete from Sickles High School in Tampa, FL, and last night in front of a local broadcast he committed to Clemson over the local favorite Florida.

McCloud is a four star athlete that rivals.com ranks as the nation's number 26 overall player.  The site has him ranked as the nation's number two athlete and the number eight ranked player in the Sunshine State.

Sammy Part II?
I have been asked several times how McCloud compares to Sammy WatkinsSammy Watkins

at this stage.  They are similar in that both have a very good change of direction and explosion.  Both have excellent open field vision and ability.  Both have excellent hands and both have elite speed.  They both look so advanced that they look like they aren't even trying while they blow by defenders.

But Watkins is bigger and stronger.  He is more of a pure wide receiver while McCloud is an athlete.  I think McCloud will play some slot receiver and some running back.  He is a guy that could develop into an excellent punt returner and kick returner.  Alabama thought McCloud was one of the nation's top cornerback prospects but Clemson likes him on offense.

His style reminds me more of what Antwan Wyatt looked like at Clemson.  Wyatt was an explosive playmaker in the open field.  Like Watkins, both McCloud and Wyatt could take it the distance at any point but McCloud's body looks more like Wyatt’s than Watkins’.

FNL
Many of the national analysts took the bait.  This past weekend McCloud visited Florida for its Friday Night Lights camp.  He did not work out but many felt this was a chance for the Gators to make the final push.  Earlier some thought UCLA was the leader, but Clemson made a great impression early and held on to upset the Gators.

Florida Success
McCloud became the fifth commitment in this class from the state of Florida and another great one from the Tampa area.  Jeff ScottJeff Scott

have worked the Tampa area relentlessly in the past few years and it paid dividends again last night.

McCloud is one of four top 25 players in Florida that are committed to Clemson according to rivals.com.  Deon Cain is a four star receiver ranked 23rd in the state.  Garrett Williams is a four star tight end who is ranked 21st.  Jake Fruhmorgen is a four star offensive lineman who is ranked 18th in the state of Florida and McCloud is a four star ranked eighth in the state.

2015
This class is almost full now with 20 commitments.  The class is ranked second in the country only behind Alabama according to rivals.com.  McCloud is the fourth top 100 player committed to the Tigers.  Rivals has five star offensive lineman Mitch Hyatt number 22 in the country.  Four star defensive end Clelin Ferrell is ranked 77th in the country and Fruhmorgen is 87th.

The Tigers are low on scholarships but are still involved with top 100 players like number 28 Albert Huggins, number 60 Shy Tuttle, number 62 Tim Settle and number 62 George Campbell.  Zach Bailey at 115 is just outside the top 100 and is another Tiger target.

So last night was another huge step in the right direction.  It was a statement in the State of Florida.  It was a statement against a local SEC power.  It was a national statement.  It was also fun and hopefully leads to more fun in the Valley starting in 2015.
