Questions to Ask
When Dan Radakovich sits down with Jack LeggettJack Leggett
Baseball Head Coach
View Full Profile
(maybe that's already happened) there are several questions he could consider.

Four More Years
On the idea of retaining Leggett or making a change at the top Radakovich could use the test that incumbents use in political campaigns when they ask, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?"

Maybe four years is not the measuring stick. Maybe Radakovich could select another time frame. Wins and losses should be part of the equation but not the only part.

Risk/Reward
Radakovich could also employ a test that many human resource decision makers use. What is the risk/reward involved with our decision?

If Clemson keeps Leggett how do the risks outweigh the rewards? Do you think the program can get better? Do you think it can digress?

If Radakovich fires Leggett the hope is always that the new guy can take the program to a higher level. That may or may not be the case but that is the risk. However, what are the chances the program gets worse? Are you will to take that risk?

Loyalty
If loyalty is a factor then Leggettt should be safe. He has been here for 21 seasons as the head coach and has earned some valuable equity but how much does loyalty play into the equation?

Changes
If he decides to keep Leggett are there other casualties? Does Radakovich call for Leggett to make moves in his staff? Are the other members of his staff safe?

If Radakovich did decide to force that issue and Leggett did not agree, what happens then? Leggett has been very loyal to his assistants in the past. If Radakovich felt other changes would have to be made how would Leggett respond?

Fundraising
Clemson is involved in a capital improvement phase right now in baseball. The program is counting on boosters and their money to support a new phase in the program. How would some of those boosters feel about Leggett coming back? How would they feel about a change?

Candidates
All good athletic directors have a short list of potential candidates in case of an emergency. How does the potential list of candidates affect the decision?

Budget
Does Clemson have the budget to fire Leggett? How much could they afford to pay a new staff if they decided to go in another direction?

Decision Makers
Is Radakovich the only person involved in this decision? How much input will others like board members or boosters have in this decision?

These are just a few of the hard questions Radakovich is having to consider. I am sure there are many more. Can he afford to fire a Hall of Fame coach? Can he afford to keep a coach that has seen a steady decline in his program?

These aren't easy questions but they have to be asked. The answers should be in shortly.
