Mickey,

A couple of observations about your blog today, " DeShaun Watson DeShaun Watson
Quarterback
6-3, 190
Gainesville, GA

View Full Profile
."  First, he is obviously a very talented young man.  I have a home near Gainesville, GA and my friend's children went to Gainesville High School. I can tell you this school is also well regarded for their academic programs.  Second, he is talented, but could really stand to gain about 30 lbs.  Third, the down side about him is that if we lose him, then we may also lose the WRs you highlighted in your blog.

Please thank Tigernet.com for putting your Blog back near the top of the home page!

Kindest Regards,

Kirk

Kirk,

Thanks for the email. You are right about Watson. He will have to get bigger and stronger at the next level but I don't ever see him putting on a ton of weight. I think he will do a great job of recruiting these top wide outs and it would be dangerous if he decommitted. But at this stage I would be very surprised if Watson signed with any team other than Clemson. I think this is a different situation than what we saw with Nkemdiche. Also the Watson-Kelly quarterback battle is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Mickey,

Does Brownell need to worry about his job this season? I know the new AD is supposed to have a short leash when it comes to losing. I really don't think he should have to though. We have lost several 1 and 2 point games, so we could easily be about 15/16 and 7/8 right now instead of hovering at .500. I also think anyone that takes a good look at our team can realize we only have 2 upperclassman, with Jennings being a huge bust and totally sporadic. The talent to win in the ACC isn't there and Brownell is still coaching up and being competitive with that. I think he deserves a couple more years to really get this thing going and getting rid of him would be a mistake, but I'm not sure he can make it through a sub .500 season with now tournament of any kind. what do you think?

Richard

Richard,

I don't get the feeling that Brownell is in trouble. I think it is too early to start thinking along those lines. I also don't get the feeling that Radakovich is ready to make this kind of move. Brownell is a terrific X and O guy and the key will be player development. He has a hard job and patience is required in this situation. I would be surprised if he was on the hot seat this season.

Hi Mickey,

Love hearing your perspective on everything Clemson. When it comes to the basketball program though, I keep hearing Brownell is a great coach but we have a problem with recruiting. Shouldn't the "problem of recruiting" be assigned (at least partially) onto Brownell. Sure, he's a great with the X's and O's but recruiting is part of his job as well. Just like we give Dabo and his staff all the credit in the world for consistently bringing in the talent, i feel blame goes to Brownell for not bringing in players like Trevor Booker, K.C. Rivers, and Demontez Stitt that past coaches recruited with basically the same amount to work with. Clemson's basketball program might not be an "easy" sale but if it was easy, everyone would do it. Your thoughts?

Garrett

Garrett,

Recruiting in Clemson basketball is difficult no matter who the coach is. Clemson football, baseball and golf are easier sells. Clemson basketball can't go out and compete on the recruiting trail with the national powers. That is not the case with football, baseball and golf. Those sports can go toe-to-toe with anyone. Clemson basketball does not carry that kind of clout. Recruiting in basketball is not a Brownell issue, its a Clemson issue.

Mickey,

A couple questions I have…

1.       Is Jeff ScottJeff Scott
Assistant Coach / WRs / Recruiting Coordinator
View Full Profile
learning the “ Chad MorrisChad Morris
Offensive Coordinator / QBs
View Full Profile
Offense?”  We all know we’ll lose the Chad in next couple years.  Is Jeff Scott learning the offense so that he can be our next OC?  If I were him I would be doing everything I could to make sure I was learning as much as I could from Chad bc if he does and can be even close as successful as Chad has been, he’ll be the next “hot HC prospect.”

2.       We were very vulnerable in 2 places in my mind (and I’m certainly no expert) this year.  The first has been talked about a lot- the secondary, and I know we recruited a few key guys there.  The second, hasn’t been mentioned much, but we were terrible on kick-off return.  What are you hearing about how these two areas are going be fixed in 2013.

3.       Who do you see stepping up to replace Nuk in 2013.  We’ve got a few very highly recruited guys at WR that haven’t really seemed to REALLY “light the world on fire.”  Who will step up to fill that role to complement Sammy in 2013 at the WR position?

4.       What are you hearing about future OOC games?  I know we have GA the next 2 years but who are we going to schedule for 2016 and 2017?  When will we start playing ND?   Will we get OK State back in 19 and 20?  I’d love to see us go play a West Coast team like Oregon St or something at some point in time.

5.       Are you hearing anything more about the Big 12?  I think we would are fine in the ACC for now as long as FSU sticks around.  Do we have any assurance that FSU is locked down in the ACC?

Thanks as always and GO TIGERS!!

John

John,

1. The entire staff is very well versed in this offense. They spend 18 hours a day in meetings and have drilled on every formation, play, check and read. The question is can anyone else game plan? How will the next guy make adjustments? Instincts have a lot to do with play calling. Will the next guy have those instincts?

2. The secondary has eight newcomers and a new coach. Also Jenkins and Breeland are expected to be healthy. In terms on kick off coverage, I am hopeful that Pinion will blast the ball through the back of the Endzone,

3. I look for Peake and Bryant to make big jumps in production in 2013. Both have ability but have not had a bunch of opportunities yet. This is a big year for both.

4. The out of conference schedules are still up in the air because of the new ACC. There are so many questions about when Louisville and Notre Dame will begin play. Those things were discussed last week at the ACC meetings but there is still no final decision.

5. The ACC meetings did a lot for solidarity. I am told that the conference feels better about its future after the meetings.
