Boston College Review
This one looked an awful lot like the last one.
The venue was different and the opponent was different but the game looked very similar. Thank goodness this one ended with the same result.
For the second straight week, the Clemson defense kept shutting down the opposing offense and it was a late defensive stand that gave the Tigers a close win.
Perhaps the two biggest plays in Clemson's 17-13 win over Boston College in Chestnut Hill came on two crucial Eagle mistakes. Boston College scored on a beautiful touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to go up 13-10. However, the Eagles' placekicker Mike Knoll missed the extra point. Their three point lead turned into a four point deficit after Clemson drove for the winning touchdown. That four point Clemson lead meant Boston College would need to get the ball into the end zone instead of having the option of a field goal attempt and a shot at overtime.
The other huge mistake came when BC's Tyler Rouse dropped a game winning touchdown pass on the game's final drive.
In some ways Clemson was fortunate to come away with this win and leave the Northeast with a 5-2 record.
Boston College used a terrific punting game to pin the Tigers deep in their own territory for much of the game. Clemson's offense was not explosive but on most of those possessions the Tigers did get the ball out from deep in their own territory. BC punter Alex Howell averaged over 50 yards per punt.
This game was one that could have turned on a turnover but neither team turned it over

got his second win as a starting quarterback and his first against a FBS school. Stoudt made several questionable decisions, especially early. However, he completed 29 of 45 passes for 285 yards.

Clemson's defense held BC to 11 first downs and 263 yards with 143 through the air and 120 on the ground. The Eagles had been averaging 316 yards a game on the ground.
Much like last week against Louisville, Clemson's defense was terrific on third down. The Eagles did not convert a third down until the fourth quarter. The Tigers have held the last two opponents to 3-31 on third downs.
Clemson had 14 tackles for losses with 13 different players involved in those plays. The Tigers had five sacks against a team that threw it only 20 times. Clemson held BC quarterback Tyler Murphy to 55 yards rushing, his season low.
The Tigers' offense came away with an impressive game winning drive. Clemson went 82 yards in less than 90 seconds setting up Davidson's touchdown run. A key 32-yard completion to Williams on third and long kept the drive alive.
In the end, the Tigers survived its trip to Chestnut Hill and won another close game. The seniors are now 8-1 in games decided by a touchdown or less. Clemson also survived another game where freshman sensation

did not play a lot. We still don't know when Watson will return from his broken finger but we know that games without him are different. Hopefully the next two games against Syracuse and Wake Forest won't be nail bitters but as long as the result is the same, I'll take it.
