Big Game?

Big Game?

The past few seasons we have seen the separation between the haves and have nots in college football continue to widen. The result is more blowouts and less drama each week for the top ranked programs.

College football is the best sport in our country, but so many of the results are predictable. The average teams and mediocre teams play close games each week, but the ranked teams are often so much better than the unranked ones. Therefore, we get very little suspense.

In our conference, Florida State plays a couple of games a year where the result is not already known when the schedule comes out. The Seminoles can play below their standards and still beat everyone on their schedule with the exception of maybe Clemson, Louisville, Miami and Florida. I guess this year you can exclude Florida and add Notre Dame and Oklahoma State to that list.

Clemson lost its best player and has had some drama in the middle of this season with close wins over Louisville, Boston College, Syracuse and Wake Forest, but Deshaun WatsonDeshaun Watson

's injury was the cause for most of the drama. If the Tigers had a healthy Watson, chances are those games would not have had the suspense.

Clemson was an underdog in Athens and in Tallahassee, but the Tigers are marginally better the rest of the teams on their schedule with maybe the exception of Louisville.

This week's game at Georgia Tech represents the first game where the Tigers should feel threatened since the Louisville contest.

Georgia Tech is 8-2 and have won three in a row. Clemson is the better team but Paul Johnson's unorthodox offense and this being a road game provide some concern for the Tigers this week.

I don't like Georgia Tech and seldom pull for the Yellow Jackets. However, I like the fact they are 8-2 coming into this week. I like the fact that the Jackets are ranked. I like the idea of this one being on the road. We have had a big game void for a few weeks, so this one is a welcomed site.

It is time to see where this team is at the point in the season. It will be a good test for this staff and team and I am interested to see where this team has progressed.

Don't get me wrong, I love dominating the opponent and I love being very confident heading into a game. But it will be nice to see the Tigers prepare for a game where they have to play well to win.

Georgia Tech has played well against the Tigers in Atlanta. The Jackets have won four in a row against Clemson. Charlie WhitehurstCharlie Whitehurst

was the last quarterback to lead the Tigers to a victory at Grant Field. This has not been a pleasant place for the Tigers, but I am anxious to see how far the program has progressed.

against the Tech offense, but those offenses were not as good as this one.

This is not as big as the trip to Athens or Tallahassee. It is not as big as the regular season finale against the arch rival. There is no division title on the line and the winner will not win the conference. These teams don't recruit against each other that much anymore.

But this one is a battle of two ranked teams. Both teams have two losses and both are hoping to end the regular season on a high. Both teams are hoping to take some momentum into their games with their rivals in two weeks. Neither team has defeated a ranked team this year, so this would be the best win for either team.

This is not a monster game, but it is nice to have a big game in November. This one is going to be fun.
