"Anybody Have a Deep Fryer?"

Monday afternoon at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, SC Clemson's men's golf team won the Palmetto Intercollegiate Championship.  Clemson freshman Austin Langdale won the individual title as well.

But the win was inspired by something legendary Clemson coach Larry Penley says he has never seen before.

"We had a lead heading into the final round and were warming up on the driving range when we heard a rooster crow," said the Hall of Fame coach.  "I thought some South Carolina fan was blaring it from his car stereo in the parking lot but our assistant coach Jordan Byrd told me otherwise.  He told me I was not going to believe what he had just seen."

What Byrd had seen was the live Gamecock mascot at the clubhouse of the golf course.  Apparently the owner lives in Aiken and decided to bring the bird to the course to support the Gamecocks, who were in third place heading into the final round.

"I had never seen this before," Penley added.  "Coaches were looking at me and no one knew how to react.  I didn't know what this was because you can go to a flea market and buy a chicken for five dollars."

But Penley's players knew how to react.

"Miller Capps is a guy that everyone on our team looks up to," he stated.  "We were on the putting green and this chicken comes up by the first tee crowing.  Miller looked at me and his teammates and asked if anyone had a deep fryer.  I'm telling you our team was ticked off.  Miller set the tone and fired our team up.  We were ready to take it to them after that."

It was the first victory of the year for Clemson and Penley, who won for the 64th time in his career. "We did not get off to a good start, but the guys finished strong. We stayed patient the entire tournament and played well in stretches. We did a good job of knowing when to be aggressive. The wind was a factor but we played smart."

Langdale had a final round 72 to finish at even-par 210, the only player in the 90-man field to shoot even par for the 54 holes. The native of Pendleton, S.C. became the first Clemson freshman to win a tournament since Kyle Stanley won the Purdue Aloha Classic in Hawaii in November of 2006. It was just the second win by a Clemson freshman since D.J. Trahan won in Las Vegas in 2000.

It also marked the second straight tournament Clemson had the individual champion, as Miller Capps won the Puerto Rico Classic last month. It is the first time Clemson has had the medalist in consecutive tournaments since Trahan won back-to-back in the fall of 2001.

Playing in his first tournament of the year, Blake Kennedy made the first eagle of his career on the par five 14th hole, then made birdie on 15 and 18 coming in. Kennedy finished with a 216 score for the 54 holes, good enough for a tie for ninth place.

"Blake gave us the shot in the arm we needed to win this tournament today," said Penley.

Penley told the story of about Capps asking if anyone had a deep fryer on my radio show Wednesday and the phrase took off on our text line and on Twitter.  Considering how the Tigers beat the Gamecocks on the course Monday, maybe Capps' words will be a new rally cry for Tiger fans.
