Wednesday practice report: Tigers start work on North Texas |
Swinney after practice audio (MP3 Format) Clemson, SC—Clemson began its game preparation for the season opener against North Texas on Wednesday. The Tigers worked for over two hours on the practice fields behind the Jervey Athletic Center. “This was our first day of scout work,” said Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney. “North Texas is a team that has many returning players, but they have eight new junior college transfers, so there will be some unknown involved. We worked on our film cut ups over the summer so we are ready from that standpoint. We will just have to make adjustments as the game goes along in regards to their unknown players.” Clemson released its depth chart for the North Texas game. There are three sets of co-starters on offense and two sets on defense. David Smith and Mason Cloy are listed as co-starters at left guard, while Xavier Dye and Brandon Clear are co-starters at one wide receiver, and Jaron Brown and Terrance Ashe at another. Brandon Thompson and Miguel Chavis are co-starters at nose guard and Brandon Maye and Tig Williard are co-starters at weakside linebacker. “Those positions are just too close to call and those players will all see a lot of action. It doesn’t matter that much who starts. It is important to have some depth, have a fresh player at the end of the game.” Swinney reiterated that there is not a co-starter situation at placekicker. “Chandler Catanzaro is the starter at placekicker. When we started camp I told him I wouldn’t put him out there unless he had won the job by a knockout. It was going to be an upset for him to do it. But, he did. Buster Douglas beat Mike Tyson a few years ago and Catman has won the kicking job at Clemson.” Rod McDowell was the only player at practice in a yellow jersey as he recovers from a sprained ankle. Kicker Richard Jackson missed practice to be with his father, who was in Greenville undergoing surgery.
