Johnson is one of the top defensive back prospects in the state, and he told TigerNet that he didn’t feel the need to waste any more time on recruiting.

“I think it was time,” Johnson said. “I just felt like Clemson was the place for me. I felt it in my heart.”

Once he made his decision and talked it over with his family, his first order of business was to call recruiter Marion Hobby.

“I called Coach Hobby and gave him the good news,” he said. “And then he gave me Coach [Dabo] Swinney’s number and I called him and talked to him. He was excited. He said they were going to have a party in the coaches’ office tomorrow.”

The 6-1, 190-pounder had offers from North Carolina and North Carolina St., but said his recruitment is over.

“This is it, man,” he said. “This commitment is solid. My family and I are all on the same page, and they are really happy about it.”

Johnson, who visited on Clemson’s Junior Day in late January, said he loved everything about Clemson.

“I like the coaches. They are really nice,” he said. “Everybody there is like a big family. And they are good with their academics, and they showed me all of the support facilities for academics. Everything is top-notch there, from the academics all the way down to their strength and conditioning program.”

As a junior, Johnson recorded 50 tackles, 10 pass breakups and four interceptions including one that he returned for a touchdown. On offense, he caught 60 passes with nine touchdowns.

Johnson is rated as a three star safety by all the recruiting services and is the fourth commitment for the 2013 recruiting class.

He plans to graduate in December and enroll at Clemson next January.
