State's Top Receiver Commits to Tigers

CLEMSON, SC -- According to the Camden Chronicle-Independent, Clemson has picked up a commitment from arguably the state’s best receiver in Camden wide receiver Kelvin Grant. This past season Grant recorded 59 catches for 1184 yards and 11 touchdowns. Included in those totals are 4 receptions for 92 yards and 1 touchdown that helped lead Camden to the 3A state title. Last season as a junior, he caught 42 passes for 887 yards and 7 scores. "Grant is a well-rounded receiver," said recruiting analyst Mickey Plyler. "He has a good frame and good speed. He also catches the football well. However, perhaps his best attribute is what he does with the ball after the catch. He is terrific in the open field much like Clemson's Derrick Hamilton. It is rare to see taller players make plays after the catch. Usually players with this kind of open field ability are smaller in size. Grant does a nice job of seeing the open field and setting up downfield blocks in the receiving game and kick return game."

Grant camped this summer at Penn State, Pittsburgh and Clemson. Grant had official visits to Clemson, Georgia, and South Carolina. He has been timed in the 40 in the 4.4-4.45 range and has a 37" vertical jump. “Kelvin’s a great athlete with a good body,” said Camden head coach Jimmy Neal. “ He jumps extremely well, and he can run. He just does some things which are kind of special.” Along with finding success in football, Grant is also an accomplished basketball player and track runner. Grant chose the Tigers over South Carolina and Georgia but also had offers from Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Penn State, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Wake Forest, Maryland, NC State, Baylor, and Kentucky among others. Clemson assistant Rick Stockstill recruited Grant for the Tigers. 2002 Football Commitments 1 DL Cory Groover 6-3 235 Hannah-Pamplico 2 LB Brandon Jamison 6-2 220 SW Miss JUCO 3 LB Kelvin Morris 6-3 225 SW Miss JUCO 4 QB Will Proctor 6-3 190 Winter Park, FL 5 LB Anthony Waters 6-3 205 Lake View, SC 6 DE Irvin Brisker 6-7 240 Conyers, GA 7 ATH Gerald McCloud 6-3 185 Jacksonville, FL 8 WR Ty Zimmerman 6-4 195 Fork Union Prep, VA 9 OL Roman Fry 6-4 255 Ironton, OH 10 P/PK Cole Cason 6-0 165 Roswell, GA 11 OL Tim Debeer 6-6 270 Atlanta, GA 12 RB Reggie Merriweather 5-10 190 North Augusta 13 DB Larry Williams 5-11 175 Tallahassee, FL 14 DB Jeff Francoeur 6-4 195 Lilburn, GA 15 OL Dustin Fry 6-2 295 Summerville 16 OL Brad Lee 6-4 265 Hephzibah GA 17 DB Chris Carter 5-11 174 Kannapolis NC 18 DL Brandon Cannon 6-4 250 Stone Mou.
