Stanton Seckinger commits to the Tigers

CLEMSON – Porter-Gaud wide receiver Stanton Seckinger (6-5, 195) committed to Clemson late Tuesday evening, and his head coach, Rick Reetz, says that Clemson is getting a great player as well as a great human being.

“I think that is probably the best thing about Stanton, is that you are not only getting a great football player, but you are getting an outstanding person,” Reetz said. “He is a kid of high moral standing, excellent character, and he is a good student. He is the prototypical kid you want in a program.”

Seckinger has only a grey-shirt offer from the Tigers right now, which means that if no scholarship is available in August, he'll wait and enroll in January. This season, Seckinger has 90 catches for over 1,600 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Reetz said that Seckinger, who had offers from Memphis and N.C. State, has been getting a lot of recent attention from other schools.

“He has been getting a tremendous amount of attention the last weeks from Vanderbilt, Duke, N.C. State and Virginia,” Reetz said. “There are a number of schools that have come looking. Mike Price, the offensive coordinator at Memphis, said he thought that Stanton had all the potential to excel at the collegiate level and beyond.”

Reetz, who has coached Seckinger the past two seasons, said Seckinger has all the tools to be a good receiver.

“He does a good job of controlling his body for someone of his height,” Reetz said. “He has very good speed and incredible quickness and he can make people miss. He knows how to get open, and he is an exciting player to watch. He is strong enough to go inside against a linebacker, and quick enough to play on the outside. He is a kid who is very hard to defend.”

Reetz said that Seckinger already loves Clemson.

“He is a great leader, and he had the opportunity to look at a lot of places,” Reetz said. “But he is somebody that loves Clemson. He loves the coaching staff, and the coaches have been tremendous to him and they like what he is doing. He loves the school, and I think you are going to be proud of him. I think he will represent Clemson very well.”

Seckinger said he called Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney earlier this evening, and the phone was passed around from Swinney to receivers coach Jeff Scott to offensive coordinator Billy Napier.

“Coach Swinney said he was really excited, saying that it made his week and his night,” Seckinger said. “He said he would be excited to have me up here again, and he welcomes me into the family. I talked to him a little while and then the phone was passed around.”

Seckinger said that every visit he made to Clemson reinforced his belief that it’s where he is meant to be.

“I had talked to several people who I value their opinion, and I just decided Clemson is the best place to continue my career. I love the coaches and feel like it is the best place for me. It was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, but I went with my gut feeling.”
