Rudolph talks commitment video, why he chose Clemson

Logan Rudolph’s commitment to Clemson Friday went viral, and both Rudolph and his brother Mason can take credit.

The 2017 linebacker prospect out of Rock Hill (SC) Northwestern posted a video to Twitter that showed him wearing jean shorts and swinging an axe at a tree. He committed to Clemson and went back to chopping down the tree, and he laughed when he recalled to TigerNet Saturday how the video came about.

His brother Mason, who is the quarterback at Oklahoma St., is home on break, and the two sat down to hatch out a plan.

“My brother is home on break, he's home for the month of May, and we were just sitting around. I knew where I wanted to go after this week, and we were kind of thinking of something to do,” Rudolph said to TigerNet. “We didn't want to just tweet something out and do a basic commitment. We wanted to try to spice it up and do something off the wall, and we kind of just chose that randomly. It did pretty well I guess. It was pretty funny.”

He said he called defensive coordinator Brent Venables and head coach Dabo Swinney to commit and told both coaches to be looking for something on Twitter.

“I told them when I committed to both Coach Venables and Coach Swinney that I was going to tweet out something after,” Rudolph said. “I didn't tell them what but they knew something was coming. Coach Venables was pumped, and so was Coach Swinney. They were both into it and really supportive and glad and congratulating me. My whole family was happy and pretty supportive. Everyone was pretty pumped up and supportive.”

Rudolph had offers from most of the region’s top programs and Clemson offered late. However, it was the family feel that put the Tigers over the top.

“After the second visit I got that family feel,” he said. “I know a lot of people talk about it, but I felt it from Clemson. I think they have one of the best coaching staffs in the country, and they are right down the road from me. That is convenient, and I don’t have that 17-hour drive like my brother does. But in the end, if felt like home and it’s a great fit.”

Rudolph will join his former head coach at Clemson – Kyle Richardson was hired by Swinney during the spring as an offensive analyst. He also says his recruitment is finished.

“That’s pretty cool, to have Coach Richardson there,” he said. “But that’s not the reason I chose Clemson. It’s the right fit for me, and I feel confident in my decision. Clemson is the place I want to be.”
