Miller Selected Late in the Second Round

CLEMSON -- The New York Jets selected former Clemson cornerback Justin Miller with the 25th pick of the second round (#57 overall).

“It’s exciting. I’ve been thinking about it the last couple of weeks,” said Miller in a press conference after his selection. “I get to be a part of a great team like the New York Jets and what a great coaching staff. It is a great opportunity for me.”

Many insiders including NFL draft expert Mel Kiper, Jr. had Miller going as a possible late first round pick or early second round pick. However, Miller slipped till late in the second round which surprised the ACC's career leader in kickoff return average.

“I think it’s shocking to me but things happen,” said Miller.” The draft is unpredictable. I’m glad I’m with a team now and have an opportunity.”

Miller would not comment on the circumstances around his arrest in Clemson last week on misdemeanor disorderly conduct and noise ordinance violation that some say may have caused his drop in the draft.

Miller could see action very early with the Jets.

“We don’t have a return guy so he is the starting return guy when he walks in here,” said Jets head coach Herman Edwards. “He is a raw, talented guy but the things he does have you can’t coach. He has speed. He can run. He’s a tough guy. He will tackle. He just needs to be coached. The great thing for him is he is coming into a situation where we have a defense that is not afraid to play young players.”
