Elite linebacker has Tigers in top five after visit |
A visit to Clemson solidified the Tigers as a top five pick for the one of the top linebackers in the nation for the 2016 recruiting cycle.

I guess the highlight for them was being able to talk with the coaches a little bit more to learn some more about Clemson and definitely being able to see the game atmosphere, too. “I had a good time on the visit. It was a good one. The highlight of it for me was to be able to see a big atmosphere because the last time I went I was at the South Carolina State game, so I wanted to see a bigger atmosphere than I saw last time.” Clemson’s top-rated defense put in a solid effort against South Carolina’s offense, and Lamar said while he paid attention to the entire defense, he paid particular attention to Clemson’s linebackers. “I was trying to watch them the whole time they were on the field but I was trying to focus on what the linebacker were doing, how they were using their hands to get off blocks, and how college offenses and defenses run,” Lamar said. “They played fast. They played excited. The looked like a disciplined defense and I liked that.” He said he was impressed with the win and the play of Clemson’s three freshmen playmakers – Deshaun Watson, Artavis Scott and Wayne Gallman. “I think it was a great win for Clemson. They had those three freshmen who played really well on offense,” Lamar said. “The defense played really well in that game, too. Brent Venables “The main thing he wanted to convey to me was just how crazy it gets in Clemson, what kind of family it is and that Clemson builds their program around that type of brotherhood,” he said. Lamar is rated as the No. 5 player at his position nationally by 247, and is the 86th overall rated player nationally by Rivals. In addition to Clemson, Lamar boasts offers from Alabama, Georgia Tech, Miami, Miss. St., North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Wisconsin. Where do the Tigers stand with Lamar? He said Clemson is firmly entrenched in his top five. “I definitely want to come back for another visit. They are in the top five schools that I'm looking at right now,” Lamar said. “The other four are Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi State and South Carolina.” In 2013, Lamar tallied 67 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, eight quarterback pressures and one interception in six games.

Lamar previously visited Clemson’s campus for the home opener against South Carolina St. in September, but he wanted to make a return trip to see Death Valley during a big game.
