’ contract Thursday after filing a Freedom of Information Act request with the university.

We reported last week that Venables – whose defense finished the season ranked first nationally – had signed a four-year contract extension that would keep him in Clemson through the 2018 season. Venables received a nearly half-million dollar raise, increasing his annual salary to $1.35 million beginning next season. With the receipt of the contract, new details have emerged.

Here are the highlights:

*Venables will be paid a base salary of $245,000 and will be paid a supplemental salary of $1,105,000 each year for the length of the contract.

*The contract runs through January 31st, 2019, and the date of the amendment to the original contract was December 15, 2014.

Buyouts

*In the event that Venables were to terminate his contract, he would owe Clemson University 25 percent of the amount remaining on the term of his contract (including base salary and supplemental salary), unless head coach Dabo SwinneyDabo Swinney

resigns or is no longer employed by Clemson or Venables takes a head coaching position on the collegiate or professional level. In other words, if Venables leaves to take a job with another program that is not a head coaching position, he owes 25 percent of the sum total of the remainder of the contract. If he leaves to become a head coach there is no buyout.

*If the university terminates with cause (fraud, cheating, etc) the university is not liable for the remainder of the contract.

*If the university terminates the contract without demonstrating cause, the university has the option of paying the remainder of the contract in one lump sum or installments.

Automobile

*The school may provide him (but not obligated to) with an automobile from the school’s dealer program. If a car is provided, the school will pay or reimburse the insurance and all applicable taxes.
