CLEMSON - One injured Clemson Tiger should return to action this week, while one's hopeful homecoming won't happen.

Fifth-year senior tight end Cole Downer, whose injury in the Miami game back on Sept. 17 led to emergency spleen removal surgery that same evening, should get some playing time Saturday when Clemson visits Georgia Tech. Because he can't be medically released to play until Saturday, Downer will go through practice all week as he did on Monday:

In a green jersey, prohibited from any contact.

That his first contact will come in game situations disturb's head coach Tommy Bowden to some extent, but apparently the doctors have assured all parties concerned that Downer is okay to return this weekend.

"I look for Cole to play some," Bowden said following Monday night's workout. "I'm just a little scared about contact. But he's a fifth-year senior, he's played tackle, so he's used to contact. I feel better in that regard.

"But his first full hitting in six weeks...that's a little bit scary."

Meanwhile, freshman running back James Davis had the stitches removed from his wrist Monday - where a metal rod was placed to stabilize the break he suffered Oct. 13 at N.C. State.

But his wish to play before the home folks in Atlanta will have to remain that, it appears. Just a wish.

"We're sticking with the original prognosis, which was 3-4 weeks," Bowden said.

The official news on defensive tackle Donnell Clark wasn't good.

Clark's knee injury suffered against Temple last Saturday proved to be a torn ACL. He is out for the remainder of the season.

Offensive tackle Marion Dukes watched practice from the sidelines in a yellow jersey on Monday, but is expected to be okay for the Georgia Tech game.
