Another Grayson prospect likely headed to Clemson

Pending Clemson’s admission office signing off on an acceptance letter, the Clemson Tigers will have a new quarterback to add to the roster.

Quarterback Nick Schuessler, who led Loganville (Ga.) Grayson High School to the Class AAAAA state championship last season, has decided to leave Mississippi State a few weeks after enrolling and Clemson is Schuessler’s first college choice.

“I have talked to Coach [Dabo] Swinney about me going to play ball up there,” Schuessler told TigerNet Friday evening. “I got a full release from my national letter of intent. I chose Clemson because Coach Swinney is such a good role model, and a good Christian man. I also like the direction the program is going, and they are definitely going to be a national championship contender. I am so blessed that some of my former high school teammates are all going up there. It is just the best fit for me.”

Schuessler told TigerNet that he has applied to Clemson, and once he gets an acceptance would like to start in time for the fall semester. Under NCAA guidelines, however, he would still have to sit out this season. He said he still doesn’t know if he will walk-on or earn a scholarship.

“We haven’t really talked about that yet,” he said. “I first have to get admitted. But if I get accepted, I definitely want to start in the fall.”

During his senior year, Schuessler led Grayson to a 15-0 record, completing 121-of-181 passes for 1,753 yards and 19 touchdowns. He picked up scholarship offers from Middle Tennessee State and Colorado State before signing with Mississippi State late in the process as a 2-star prospect.

However, he knows a lot about Clemson after attending Swinney’s high school camp last summer.

“I was up there for camp the week that one of the quarterback’s committed,” he said. “Coach [Chad] Morris and Coach Swinney told me they liked me in that camp. But that is the only time I have been up there. At the end of last season, Coach Swinney offered me a grayshirt and the opportunity to come in for 2013. I chose not to do that at that time, and I felt that Miss. St. was the best decision for me. But looking back, it was the wrong decision.”

The Tigers have already received commitments for 2013 from the Grayson Trio – No. 1 recruit Robert Nkemdiche, running back Wayne Gallman and defensive back David Kamara. Schuessler knows Nkemdiche well, because the nation’s number one recruit lives with Schuessler and his parents when Nkemdiche’s parents are out of town.

“For a long time, Wayne was the only one committed to Clemson,” he said. “But I was always high on Clemson; I just didn’t have that offer. It was like my dream school. But now that Robert is going there, and Wayne and David are going there, it has made this transition easier.”

He told TigerNet he feels like he would be a perfect fit for Morris’ offense.

“Honestly, you can take and see what Coach Morris has done there, and how dynamic and explosive they are,” he said. “They have so many weapons with Tajh and Sammy, and honestly, it would be a dream to go up there and compete for a position. I would love to play in that offense.”
