All In Cookout: Tigers host top prospects in signature summer recruiting event

by - Senior Writer -

July means cookouts, and the biggest of the summer will take place later today when head coach Dabo Swinney and the Clemson coaching staff host the All In Cookout, the final recruiting event of the summer.

This will be the sixth All In Cookout – it was introduced in 2012, and the Tigers immediately received three commitments. Running back Tyshon Dye, wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and tight end Cannon Smith (class of 2014) all gave their verbals that night, although Robinson wound up at Florida (where he wound up with 105 catches over three years).

Since that initial Cookout, there have been just two on-the-spot commitments: 2013 defensive lineman Jabril Robinson and 2016 5-star linebacker Tre Lamar.

However, a number of prospects have left the event and committed in the days and weeks following the Cookout, including Mike Williams (2013), Scott Pagano (2013), Austin Bryant (2015), Ray-Ray McCloud(2015), Nyles Pinckney (2016), Jordan Williams (2017) and A.J. Terrell (2017).

That leads us to this year’s Cookout, which will be headlined by 5-star quarterback commit Trevor Lawrence, whose Georgia ties will be used to influence two of Clemson’s top offensive line targets for the 2018 recruiting cycle.

Jamaree Salyer, a 5-star OG out of Atlanta (GA) will be on hand with his mother. Salyer made the trip to campus for Swinney’s high school camp in June, but he was accompanied by a coach for the one-day visit. Having his mother along for this visit is a good sign. Salyer told me at The Opening in Oregon that it’s still a six-team race, but the word from those closest to his recruitment say it’s Clemson and Georgia.

Another attendee to watch is 4-star lineman Trey Hill of Warner Robbins (GA) Houston County. Hill was one of the standouts at The Opening earlier this month, and he told us he plans to commit in December and sign during the early signing period that same month. He plans to enroll in college in January.

Clemson is considered by some to be in Hill’s top three, and we know that Florida State, Georgia, and Auburn are among other schools in the mix. Hill was last on campus for the spring game back in April and earlier for a Junior Day in January. Hill, who visited Auburn Thursday, is bringing his parents to the Cookout.

Another 5-star prospect that will be on hand – and who is also bringing his family – is 5-star cornerback Anthony Cook of Houston (TX) Lamar. Cook is ranked at No. 36 in the ESPN300, is rated as the best prospect in the state of Texas by both 247 and Rivals and is considered to be the nation’s top corner by other services.

Cook chose to attend the Cookout over Ohio St.’s Friday Night Lights.

“With Clemson, they will be in it until the end. They are one of my top schools,” Cook said. “The reason I like Clemson is that it's a family-like environment. They are on a high pedestal, and their players get a lot of looks from the NFL. I have a great relationship with the defensive backs coach, Coach Reed and he puts a lot of players in the NFL. That is why Clemson is one of my top schools.”

Cook told TigerNet he was looking forward to bringing his family to Clemson.

“I will have my family with me - my mom and my dad and my grandma,” he said. “I will be making a decision soon, so I am going to evaluate. I am going to hang out with the players and the coaches, but I am going to see if Clemson is the place for me. I can't say it wouldn't be tough playing that far away from home, but I don't think there would be a problem with it.”

Finally, there is 5-star defensive back Tyson Campbell of Fort Lauderdale (FL) American Heritage. Campbell was last on Clemson’s campus in January for Junior Day, and he will make the trip this time around with his parents.

Campbell was also one of the standouts at The Opening, winning the 40-yard dash competition with a blistering time of 4.27.

Notables that won’t be at the Cookout are wide receiver Justyn Ross (in a 7-on-7 with his team in Alabama), defensive end K.J. Henry (at Ohio St.) and offensive line target Jackson Carman (thought to be headed to Ohio St. as well).

Two commitments that won’t be in attendance are defensive end Xavier Thomas and linebacker Mike Jones, Jr. The IMG teammates have an IMG football boot camp that they can’t miss.
