Tigers Down Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON - Clemson's young basketball team took its act on the road Saturday for the first time this season and came away with yet another victory.

K.C. Rivers and Akin Akingbala each scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures, as the Tigers (4-0) eased past Charleston Southern, 68-56. The game was played at the North Charleston Coliseum, a move designed by Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell to help get his team better exposure around the state.

Shawan Robinson had 11 points for the Tigers, while James Mays added 10. Mays also had a game-high 13 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end. Clemson lost the overall rebounding battle by eight.

Clemson led by as many as 21 points late in the game, before the Buccaneers whittled it down to 12 at the end. The Tigers gained the advantage with a familiar formula - defense. Clemson forced 27 turnovers on the evening.

Charleston Southern (2-1) was led by 13 points and 10 rebounds from Vernon Huger. Trent Drafts had eight points and six rebounds.

"We knew that Charleston Southern would put up a great fight tonight and I give them credit for doing just that," said Purnell. "I thought we did a good job defensively against their three-point shooters and that was a big key to the game."

The margin of victory might have been significantly greater had Clemson not suffered through a horrible free throw shooting night. The Tigers hit just 13-of-30 (43 percent) from the charity stripe. They shot 39 percent from the field.

"I thought Clemson's athleticism and defensive tenacity was outstanding tonight and coach Purnell really has them playing with a purpose on the defensive end," said CSU head coach Barclay Radebaugh. "Our basketball team did some good things tonight but we also saw that we have a lot of improving to do. Hopefully a game like this will help us get to where we want to be."

Clemson returns to action Tuesday in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge, traveling to State College, Pa. to face Penn State. Tip-off is 8 p.m., and the game will be televised by ESPN-U.
