McIntyre Signs on for Year Number Two with the Patriots |
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., September 18, 2002 – Fayetteville Patriots guard
Terrell McIntyre has re-signed with the NBDL and will play for the Fayetteville Patriots again this season if he doesn’t make an NBA roster during veterans camp next month. The Patriots start their season on Nov. 15 at home against the Asheville Altitude. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Season-tickets start at $56. Single-game tickets go on sale Oct. 15. Call 213-1012 for information. McIntyre, who is a Raeford native, was one of the first two players allocated to the Patriots before their inaugural season in 2001-2002. All season he played like a team’s first choice. He started 38 of the 39 games, was fifth in the league in scoring with 15.3 points per game and third in assists with 4.9 per game. An ankle injury sustained during a game at Columbus on Feb. 15 ended McIntyre’s season. He still earned second team All-NBDL honors with impressive numbers that included shooting 89 percent from the free throw line (second in the league) and 42 percent from 3-point range (fifth in the league). He led the league in assists for a good portion of the season before Patriots coach Jeff Capel decided to move him to shooting guard and Omar Cook to the starting point guard slot. McIntyre played high school basketball, football and baseball at Hoke County High before going on to become the all-time leader in 3-point field goals, steals, minutes played and 3-point field goals attempted at the University of Clemson. He is second on the Tigers all-time scoring list (1,839), 41 points behind New Orleans Hornets center Elden Campbell. As a Patriot last season, he led the team in scoring 10 times, including a 36-point night on Feb. 8 at home against North Charleston. He also set an NBDL single-game scoring record the same night. Teammate Greg Stempin later tied the record. McIntyre’s first 30-point game in the league came on Jan. 23 when he posted 30 points, four assists and five steals against the Mobile Revelers. In January, McIntyre averaged 14.8 points and 5.4 assists per game and shot 93 percent from the free throw line and was named NBDL Player of the Month. He had a season-high nine assists against Roanoke on Jan. 26. The Orlando Magic invited McIntyre to play on its summer league team. The NBDL, the NBA’s minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.). The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA’s umbrella. Nine NBDL players and three NBDL coaches have been called up to the NBA since the start of the league’s inaugural season in November 2001. Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the NBDL serves a source of on-court talent for the NBA’s 29 teams and as a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
