Lady Tigers Take Sixth Straight Over Gamecocks, 56-43 |
COLUMBIA, SC-Erin Batth and Nuria Forns both scored 15 points each in
leading Clemson to a 56-43 win over South Carolina in a women's intercollegiate basketball game at Columbia, SC Wednesday night. With the win, Clemson is now 3-2 on the year, while the Gamecocks are now 1-4. This is also the sixth straight year that the Lady Tigers have defeated South Carolina. Chrissy Floyd also had 13 points for the Lady Tigers. Forns and Batth also had seven rebounds each. Petra Ujhelyi had 11 points and 15 rebounds to lead South Carolina. Clemson built a 18-14 lead with 6:06 left to go in the first half as Chrissy Floyd hit a jumper. From this point, South Carolina went on a 8-0 run as Ines Ananovic came off the bench and hit a three pointer and a jumper to lead the rally and give the Gamecocks a 22-18 lead with 2:29 left. The Gamecocks had a 27-20 advantage as Daniela Strohm hit a three pointer with 1:27 remaining. Clemson's Erin Batth hit two field goals to narrow the lead 27-24 right before the half. After eight minutes into the second half, Clemson took a 30-27 lead after scoring the first six points and holding the Gamecocks scoreless. The Gamecocks scored the first points of the second half at the 11:38 mark (8:22 gone in the second half) The Lady Tigers outscored the Gamecocks 20-5 in the first 12:26 to take a 44-32 advantage with 7:34 remaining in the game. Forns had seven points in this Lady Tiger rally and Floyd hit two three point field goals. "I am very pleased with the effort of our basketball team," said Clemson Head Coach Jim Davis. It is always good to come from behind in the second half and win. We did a better job taking care of the basketball in the second half. The tempo of the game was in our favor. We play a lot of players and I was pleased with the way we ran them down. Erin did a great job with her great post defense. Nuria played one of her best defensive games. I am very proud of our team--with the desire and with the way we played. Erin is a veteran player and with her steal and layup right before the half, we built on this momentum at the start of the second half."
