, in taking a 73-66 victory over the Tigers in ACC action at Littlejohn Coliseum Sunday evening in beating the Tigers for the 26th time in the last 28 meetings between the schools.

Duke (15-2, 3-0) did it by doing the little things – hitting free throws and avoiding fouls and turnovers – while the Tigers struggled from the line in hitting just 10-of-20 foul shots. The Tigers (9-8, 1-2) were awarded the chance to go to the free throw line 12 times during the game and eight times failed to make the first free throw.

added 12 points and 13 rebounds. Andre Dawkins led Duke with 24 points, Mason Plumlee added 12 points and Miles Plumlee collected 14 rebounds.

said. “They have so many good players; it’s hard to keep them all down. We had a stretch there in the first half where we got a little too excited because of how well we were playing. We started taking some quick shots, and that allowed them to come back in the game. We didn’t make free throws. I thought we competed hard. We did a good job

causing turnovers for them and getting them out of rhythm. I thought we rebounded well and got to the free throw line, which is hard to do.”

The Blue Devils led 32-28 at intermission – after trailing 15-7 early in the contest – but looked poised to put the game out of reach with a 14-7 run to begin the second half that put them ahead 46-33. Jennings followed with a half hook that started a 5-0 Clemson run over the next three minutes that put Clemson back in the mix.

Duke stayed in control and still led by nine points with a little over two minutes to play when the Tigers made their final run. Andre Young hit a 3-pointer from the wing with 2:13 remaining that made it 65-59. Freshman K.J. McDanielsK.J. McDaniels

followed that with a one-hander in the lane that made it 65-61 with 1:40 remaining, bringing the loud and raucous Littlejohn crowd to its feet.

However, Dawkins nailed a 3-pointer from the right wing with 18.7 seconds remaining that effectively sealed the win for the Blue Devils.

Brownell said there were no moral victories in a loss.

“We’re here to win games. I understand that Duke’s a terrific team,” he said. “They are obviously well- coached and all of that, but we had opportunities to win the game. We’re not having a great year at all, so everybody can say we had a good effort or that it was a good try. You can’t let that fool you. We played better and did some good things. There were some positives that can be taken from this. But at the end of the day, on your home court, you have to try to find a way to win that game, especially when you get off to a good start. We didn’t get it done.”

The Tigers play at Miami this Wednesday, returning home next Saturday as they host Georgia Tech in a 2:30 p.m. contest.
