Wolfpack Mercy Rules Tigers In Jacksonville

by - Correspondent -

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A season of record lows for the Clemson baseball team might have bottomed out Thursday night.

Graham Stoneburner couldn't get out of the first inning, spotting N.C. State six early runs which kick-started the Wolfpack to a 10-0 victory over the Tigers in the ACC Tournament. The game was called after seven innings due to the tournament's mercy rule.

The loss may also have been the death knell for Clemson's NCAA Tournament hopes. The Tigers (30-27-1) likely needed two wins here in Jacksonville to gain an at-large bid when spots are announced next week. Thursday night's defeat means Clemson can win just once.

The big first inning was more than enough for 'Pack righthander Clayton Shunick (6-5).

Shunick retired the first 13 batters he faced before Doug Hogan singled with one out in the fifth inning. Wilson Boyd followed with a double that advanced Hogan to third, but Shunick stranded the runners there by retiring the next two Tigers.

Those were the only Clemson base runners until Shunick hit Kyle Parker leading off the seventh. But the next three batters went out in order to end the game.

Shunick struck out eight and didn't walk a batter in his complete-game performance.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack (38-19) offense pounded out 17 hits on the evening against Stoneburner and three relievers. Craig Gullickson followed with one-third of an inning, allowing two runs. Justin Sarratt turned in a career-high five innings, giving up two runs.

Matt Zoltak pitched a perfect seventh inning.

Clemson is off Friday, and will close out ACC Tournament play at 10 a.m. Saturday vs. Georgia Tech.
